If you do not bed the action it can damage the stock when shooting cartridges that recoil more than 223 Remington. ...

    Some people have had trouble getting to 3000 feet per second with a 175 grain ELD-X. I was able to get there with N560 and a max load while having good accuracy from my X-Bolt's 24-inch barrel. The Hornady data for 7 PRC has the charge weights and it downloadable from their website.

    I subscribe to your magazine and am suprised you don't include Winchester 231 (or HP38) in loads for the 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP. It is a very versatile and accurate powder for all of those calibers.

    Those would be great groups at 50 yards, but I am sure he said 15 yards. My Ruger shoots better off sandbags. I wonder if that much recoil is causing some shifting in the Ransom inserts.

    Thanks for your highly-informative material on handloading for the .45-70. I myself have not attempted such but may in the future, and what you say here is invaluable. As a minor incidental note, I think you are confusing two words in your speech, namely, "conducive" (pronounced CON-DOO-SIVE) and "conductive (CON-DUCT-IVE)" The context of your usage repeatedly suggests the first word, and not the second, even though your usage, for all I know, may have an inherent etymological correctness attached to it! :-)

    I've used the same load with the cleanshot, but I'm down to the last of it. I have quite a few powders for the ACP to play with, but I have a jug of IMR target that needs emptying since I can't replace it so that's what I plan to work up my next 45 loads with...as well as a few other calibers. What's angering is when you find a perfect load with a discontinued powder.

    I really enjoyed this video. At the beginning of 2024 I bought a Springfield Garrison 45. I always wanted a 45. So I started reloading for it and I really like Accurate #7 with 200 gr x-treme plated round nose for target shooting. And my second choice is CFE with the same bullet. 7 shoots at about 950 to 1000ish fps and CFE is 925 to 950ish fps. CFE is an excellent all around powder for my 9mm. 38/357 and 45. But my favorite powders are: 9mm-Vihta Vuori 3n37 38 spl-Winchester Autocomp 357-Alliant Power Pro 300MP and Accurate #9 45-Accurate #7

    Two cartridges that I don't want to experiment around with anymore are the 44 spl and 45 acp. I just wanted for the 44 spl a round that used a 250 grain cast and coated bullets and for the 45 acp the old cast and coated SWC bullet (the one with the longer nose. Ok.. the 44 spl. I do not shoot any 'spl' rounds in my mag guns. At this time all I have in 44 spl is my Uberti 1873 4.75" which is unbelievably accurate I think you did a test on a gun exactly like mineand got great results.. Oddly... the load you got the best or near best results from was the same one I had worked up wit #5 at around 800 fps...This is really the only load I need for the only gun I have in that caliber. On the 45 acp I chose the 200 cast and coated SSWC because I could not get a load that shot badly with this bullet and powder... weird that the two calibers use almost the same powder charge. The 200 works in every 1911 we have tried At around 1050 fps It is accurate and hard hitting.

    • @a1nelson
      @a1nelson 14 днів тому

      I have to agree with you on the 45. As you may be aware, Hornady specifically recommends 800 fps for maximum accuracy, which is the starting load for #5. I’ve had good success with it myself. I actually use 185gr, just to minimize impact on the >100 yr old parts/metallurgy my (true) 1911, but that’s potato-potato with the 200gr loads. I don’t load 44 Spl, but I do load 44 Mag. For that, I’ve been _really_ impressed with both the performance and _cleanliness_ of N110. If I decide to put together some 44 Spl, I’ll probably give N340 a try. I’ve had very good luck with it - also super clean and predictable - for 9mm and 38 spl.

    • @HandloaderTV
      @HandloaderTV 14 днів тому

      I can completely understand that load development for handguns can be tedious. We did do a test on a Taylors & Co Uberti Cattleman in 44 special. I believe that video was a direct result of your request if memory serves me. It's a great gun and nearly every load was sub 1 inch at 15 yards. All great information thank you very much for sharing it and taking the time to watch and comment we greatly appreciate it! --Jeremiah

      @@HandloaderTV Yes we have talked on the phone several times you even graciously invited me to go shooting with you if I were in the area. My girlfriend actually lives in the Phoenix area as do my 94 year old parents! I like a lot of different guns from historical to more modern but few semis or rifles. I think we started talking after I suggested to the editor to try coated cast bullets...Gasp! who would do such a thing right? LOL... now most mags are using em. I guess sometimes the older guys are reluctant to try new stuff... but then I am 74.. My load devel0pment these days is mostly practical .. in that I don't want 10 or so 8lb jugs of powder around or 50 half used boxes of bullets. As it is I have to have 5 different powders and 4 types of primers and tubes of cast and coated bullets. So I look for loads that work in several guns at a time Your magazine (and show) are very interesting to me. I can see the new powders that I don't have and may never... and see how they compare with those I do have and use a lot ... if that makes sense.

    • @doranmaxwell1755
      @doranmaxwell1755 13 днів тому

      @@a1nelson Well. what I do mostly ..95% of the time is shoot cast bullets coated with HT. They of course produce a lot less pressure. I also believe that the older long nose SWC bullet is very accurate even when compared to jacketed bullets... it was indeed developed as a target bullet for bullseye and they ran em around800 fps I think some accuracy for cast bullets is degraded by the lube type of even lack of. Leading also becomes a problem. I believe that HT coat solves both handily. Just about any lube/alloy will work for sub 800 fps so I think that was a factor in what they shot. In my case I cast and lubed my own bullets and a very accurate load for me was around 850 with the 200 swc... When I switched to HT coat not only was the gun(s) much cleaner with no leading but alloy did not matter.. and velocity increased the accuracy if anything! which makes sesnse to me since they really act more like jacketed than cast anyway I am shooting HT coat bullets in .357 mag and 44 mag and .30 carbine Ruger and even a .357 Henry lever gun that gets on up to the almost 1800 fps range.

    • @HandloaderTV
      @HandloaderTV 17 днів тому

      Hindsight being 20/20 I would have changed some things and likely tried another lot of brass from ADG mine seems to be thicker and have less capacity than most. However it is high quality and I have gotten a lot of firings out of it. We used the most accurate load from our separate load development videos and if I could do it over again I would have used the fastest along with the most accurate load side by side and had two drop charts. This is certainly something we would like to do more of in the future though. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! --Jeremiah

      Great question the O ring does not need to be removed with the addition of a suppressor but as always double check your alignment with a rod to be sure. In this case we did not remove it and it prevented the suppressor from coming loose even after many round. However, it does make the suppressor more difficult to remove and may require a wrench to do so especially after a prolonged range session. Great question thank you for watching! --Jeremiah

    I have heard several theories about the lacquer coating on 5.7x28 cartridges. These all stem from the shape of the case. There is actually a 0.001 inch taper on the case but, this amounts to a straight walled case. They needed a straight wall case to facilitate the straight line magazines used in P90's and PS90's. Any significant taper would have mandated a banana magazine like in the AK47. Rumor has it that the lacquer lubricant aids in feeding 50 cartridges up the straight lined magazine. That's a lot of friction to overcome. More believably, the rumor is that the lubricant is necessary to get the spent cases to extract from the chamber. Most rifle-style cases employ a substantial taper to help them break loose from the chamber. The 5.7x28, being straight walled, needs a lubricant to help out. I have found it essential to maintain the lacquer lubricant intact. I discard scratched cases. I clean the cases using an ultrasonic cleaner from Hornady... no tumbling... ever.

    It would be better to test the cases in a case gage 1) after resizing, 2) after bullet seating... just to be sure that the procedures are working. I prefer the "slotted" (i.e. cutaway) style case gages from Sheridan Engineering. I have had a lot of trouble with the seating of the bullet causing the case to bulge. To deal with this I first use a precision expansion arbor to open the case neck to a diameter of 0.223 inches. This is one thousandth less than the bullet diameter. I find that minimal neck tension helps to control the case bulging during bullet seating. I also lubricate the inside of the case neck using a Q-tip with a fine mica dry lubricant from Lyman. This also helps reduce the case bulging problem. Having lubricated the neck, I worry about the bullet slipping during chambering so, I apply a medium factory crimp. The factory style crimp dies from Lee work best. Still I get just a bit of case bulging. The cartridges miss seating fully in the case gage by a few thousandths of an inch.

    Mr. Venturino was a true gentleman and quite the expert as far as firearms and loads were concerned. He always had time to assist anyone, answering emails and the like. When I had some rather specific questions regarding paper patched bullets in my black powder Sharps rifle, he responded quickly and gave me good advice. He will be greatly missed. RIP Mike.

    Mike and a select few others were the real deal regarding the classic firearms. He walked the walk as they say. We are losing the great ones way too soon. I’ve had the pleasure of firing the sten a few times at Knob Creek. It’s one of my favorites.
